Real Salt Lake is back in action after the international break. RSL is in a bit of a slump. They have lost their last three games and are currently in 11th place in the West, two spots out of the playoffs.
Sporting Kansas City has fared even worse. They have just one win in their last eight games. They’re still led by interim head coach Kerry Zavagnin. In a year when they fired Peter Vermes, who had served as the head coach for 15 years, it’s not surprising they’re in the midst of a rough season.
Diego Luna is expected to start, and it will be his first game with a few of the new players. DeAndre Yedlin will have to sit this one out due to yellow card accumulation; he brought a few with him when joining from Cincinnati and then picked another one up against Minnesota. With Victor Olatunji and Rwan Cruz in the mix, and Johnny Russell facing his old team, we could see some exciting moments from the attack.
This game is a match between two struggling teams, but it’s also a rivalry with a lot of history. If RSL wants to pull themselves above the playoff line, they have to win a home game like this, especially since they host a challenging LAFC side midweek.
