RSL mutually terminates Sam Johnson contract

The move is not a surprising one.

Sam Johnson is officially no longer a Real Salt Lake player, according to a club-issued release today.

The decision, the release states, was mutual; certainly, RSL was strongly motivated to move away from the player after he was suspended following the revelation that he had allegedly held large parties at his home.

One of those parties was reported to have had a shooting take place; Johnson was not implicated in any reporting about the event.

Following his suspension, Johnson posted photos on Instagram from Liberia.

The club offered no comment on the cutting of ties with Johnson, but with the current COVID-19 climate, the odds of him returning to the club after holding 100-plus-person house parties would have been extremely small in a league that has had multiple games cancelled for multiple positive cases on one team.

This brings a close to Johnson’s time at RSL in just his second season.
