Wasatch Soccer SentinelWhen Sunny arrived at Salt Lake in 2016, he had a magnificent string of games in which he was tenacious on defense and sharp on the ball. He complimented Beckerman perfectly. Everything was great until he shattered some bones in his face. He hasn’t quite found the same form since.
What to know
Sunny was born in Lagos, Nigeria and then spent much of his youth in Spain. He did not experience much stability at the club level, but did play alongside the likes of Juan Mata and Gerard Pique on some youth national teams and had a good stint at Valencia CF. After some journeys around Europe, he came to RSL in January of 2016.
What to expect in 2018
Sunny was not with the team for the first few days of training. The first comments from RSL leadership were more stern and frustrated, but later Sunny showed up and they played down whatever happened. As fans, we may never know exactly what went down during the offseason, but he’s here now and he has a lot to prove at this point. Expect a Sunny that wants to earn his starting spot or at least consistent minutes on the field.
What to hope for
If Sunny can find his form and resemble the player we saw in early 2016, he absolutely deserves to see a lot of time on the field. He definitely will have to earn his minutes with Damir Kreilach coming to the club and Luke Mulholland also not wanting to relinquish his spot.
