MLS Draft 2017: RSL picks UIC goalkeeper Andrew Putna in third round

Matt Montgomery

Undoubtedly in an effort to shore up their goalkeeper group at Real Monarchs, Real Salt Lake drafted goalkeeper Andrew Putna out of the University of Illinois at Chicago with a third-round draft pick acquired from Houston Dynamo.

This draft pick, the fourth pick in the third round, came in exchange for Abdoulie Mansally in February 2016.

Putna was UIC’s captain in 2016, and he ended his campaign as the school’s second-best player in terms of wins and shutouts.

Real Salt Lake passed with their natural pick, the 13th in the third round. Montreal Impact also passed in the third round with the 19th pick, but they were the only two clubs to do so. Several other teams passed in the fourth round.
