Player Ratings: San Diego FC 1-3 Real Salt Lake

It was the Diego Luna show yet again.

Player Ratings: San Diego FC 1-3 Real Salt Lake

Cabral (GK) — 7: Another good showing, this time without too much to do. An unfortunate moment with Brayan Vera doesn’t reflect on his performance.

  • Hidalgo (RB) — 5: Generally dealt with the minor threat coming down RSL’s left side reasonably well, but a lack of awareness saw him two late yellows. The first was for pulling a player back after he missed receiving an extremely straightforward pass from Diogo Goncalves; the second was for some cynical time-wasting on a throw-in. Neither was necessary — the player was running into traffic in the first incident, and he could have just taken the throw-in as right back instead of ‘handing it over’ to a midfielder. With Javain Brown recovering from surgery and the center back position light, it was a red card that he could and should have avoided.
  • Quinton (CB) — 7: Had one or two good moments and generally was well-positioned enough to not be physically tested. A good night, especially with a replacement CB after Vera’s first-half substitution.
  • Vera (CB, off 19’) — N/A: Took an extremely hard hit from an onrushing Rafael Cabral, wasn’t on long enough for a rating. It looked very bad, and while it’s good he walked off the field himself, we’re hoping for the best.
  • Katranis (LWB) — 7.5: He wasn’t particularly tested defensively on the left wing, with San Diego having a clear preference toward his opposite side. In the attacking front, he created more key passes than any other RSL player. Nothing to sniff at there.
  • Eneli (CM) — 7.5: Another good performance from the captain. He controlled the midfield ably.
  • Ojeda (CM) — 7.5: Yep, he was also good.
  • Gozo (RW) — 7: His first MLS start was a good one. At 18, we shouldn’t expect the world of him, but he did show some real attacking promise. That RSL wasn’t left missing Dominic Marczuk speaks volumes. He played 90 minutes, too. Remarkable.
  • Goncalves (AM, off 90+3’) — 6.5: He had a couple really nice passes, but he also made some now-typical mistakes that could have made the game more comfortable for RSL, including one moment where he got caught in apparent indecision in the box.
  • Luna (AM, off 89’) — 9: How good is this kid? He scored a really lovely goal, finished a penalty well, and just looked like the most dangerous player on the pitch.
  • Piol (FW, off 67’) — 6: Didn’t offer much attacking thrust and largely drifted in and out of the game.

Substitutes

  • Junqua (CB, on 19’) — 8.5: I’ve been skeptical of Junqua, but his center back performance was a significant improvement over his attempts to spell Katranis on the left wing. The goal was a very nice cherry on top.
  • Agada (FW, on 67’) — 6.5: I can’t not rate a player who played more than 20 minutes, but it’s sure hard to with Agada here. There just wasn’t much to see.
  • Wolff (AM, on 89’) — N/A
  • Caliskan (AM, on 90+3’) — N/A
